What exactly is it for?

To prevent the wrist from hyperextending when the load increases. It's useful for all pushing exercises: weighted dips, bench press, overhead. It doesn't replace wrist strength; it prevents the joint from losing alignment before the muscle has finished its work.

When should I tighten them?
